DynaHackDynaHack is a NetHack variant with randomized equipment, new items, newmonsters, new maps, new challenges and an advanced ASCII interface.Note: I (tungtn) will no longer be working on DynaHack after this release, soplease do not email me bugs or feedback. Instead, post them toso that other people can see them.
Potions of gain level will increase your experience level. An uncursed potion will do only that. Quaffing a blessed potion of gain level will set your experience level to some point midway between your newly-increased level and the next level. Uncursed potions will not add experience points; if you have 39 experience points and are level 2, a blessed potion would put you at 60XP and level 3. Alchemy Edit. For alchemy, mixing a potion of gain energy and a healing/extra healing/full healing will 'upgrade' them to an uncursed and diluted potion of extra healing, full healing, or gain ability, respectively. If you dip a potion of confusion into gain energy, you will get a potion of enlightenment (1/3 chance) or booze (2/3 chance).

I always think people overestimate the downsides of levelling beyond 14.
By the time you're hitting XL14 you're likely ready for the quest anyhow, which means you're (hopefully) reasonably ready to deal with anything in there. And post-castle, I've never seen a situation where I'm getting swamped by anything difficult because I'm XL14 or 25.Barring the obvious speedbumps like Rodney, minotaurs, elementals on the plane of air, and various things on astral etc, the player is likely to be massively outclassing anything they're going to run into in the late game. I wouldn't deliberately not level beyond 14 because it was going to make the game harder, put it that way.
The creatures that are going to give you a hard time are going to be there regardless. That said, there's not a lot of benefit to levelling past 14 either, beyond the odd class-related intrinsic and gaining more training slots.Personally, I tend to chug!oGL as and when I find them, once I know they aren't cursed. Past 14, there's not really any benefit to uncursed vs. Blessed, as being halfway through gaining umpty-billion xp to the next level is still unachievable by just hitting things. Others have pointed out good reasons for not quaffing, or other situational quaffing times (e.g. I'll just add that if you're going to drink it for a player level, and you want to maximize the benefit, try to max out your Constitution first.
That way you'll get the most extra HP from it. It's only going to net you a couple more HP at most, trivial really, but if you're min/maxing, that's a consideration.
You'll get a lot more HP from other easy sources, like nurse dancing or blessed healing potions. Nice reference! Made me laugh, but I'm not sure you cursed tested properly! You are correct with everything you said, no arguments there. My point is how much will this potion help you in mid late game? On turn one it will provide the most benefit compared to any other point in the game, measured in terms of survivability.Funny you mention wizards, as I almost exclusively play that class. I will quaff every time!
Granted I won't be killing monsters much for the next few levels. I'll let the pet do it of course. But I want to get to level two ASAP for the HP and MP.
